Description

Under general supervision, manage overall physical stability conditions for inactive Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), proximal Water Dams (WDs) and their foundations, and for active facilities as required. Serve as resource for Geotechnical and Hydrological information and analysis.

 

  • Supervise, guide and participate in activities to maintain the performance of tailings and water dam facilities through inspection, measurement, data management, interpretation, analysis, coordination, problem solving and reporting
  • Apply and improve performance of tailings and water management systems and associated procedures for assigned inactive facilities
  • Oversee Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) activities as needed for activities at TSFs and WDs
  • Collaborate with Engineers and maintenance to continuously ensure good performance of tailings and water management areas and to identify and implement associated improvements; this includes engaging the Engineer of Record in the design and operations of TSF and WD facilities
  • Work on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects and serve as a point of contact with corporate engineers and management, including tracking all recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, reporting actions regularly, as well as communicate accurate, timely and relevant Geotechnical information to the Site management team
  • Contribute to annual operational and sustaining capital budget preparation by supplying costs and recommendations; manage appropriate budgets for consulting and other services such as drilling and construction contractors
  • Assist with the development, maintenance and implementation of closure plans and sustaining capital forecasts for assigned tailings and/or water management areas
  • Manage and /or mentor Engineers in key practice areas to level of capabilities
  • Review designs in key practice areas and understand interaction with other functional areas/disciplines
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline and five (5) years of related experience in Engineering or related field, OR
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline and three (3) years of related experience in Engineering or related field
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or equivalent relevant certification
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil, Geologic, Geotechnical, or Hydrologic Engineering or a related field of Engineering
  • Able to demonstrate technical competence through design and/or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas: tailings storage, water dams, reclamation and closure planning for tailings facilities
  • Knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office, AutoCAD)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others

 

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical or Water/Wastewater Engineering specialization
  • Professional Engineer’s license
  • At least five (5) years of work experience
  • Fluency in Spanish or Bahasa Indonesian languages
  • Experience with metal mining operations, especially with tailings storage facility (dam), water dams and/or crushed leach stockpile design and operations
  • Experience with slurry transport analysis and design
  • Experience with cost estimating for civil projects, project scheduling and project controls
  • Able to research and analyze information of relatively small scope and minimal difficulty and draw valid conclusions
  • Able to evaluate and implement new methods and techniques in design projects and operational support
  • Superior interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills with diverse teams of technical and non-technical staff
  • Skilled in related Engineering software (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GoldSim), programming languages
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestic / international
  • Ability and willingness to travel at least five (5) weeks for every quarter

  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable State Laws
