Safely performs duties related to the blasting and excavation of natural materials at a highly skilled level.


  • May operate stemming equipment such as:  backhoes, front-end loaders, skid-steer loaders, stemming trucks, and light-duty vehicles
  • May be responsible for:
    • Conducting pre-shift meetings and ensuring that all inspection checklists are completed for all vehicles and equipment
    • Pre-loading inspections of all blast areas
    • Managing explosives magazines, persons entering explosives magazines, inventories, transportation of explosives in and out of magazines, and vehicle traffic around the magazines
    • Measuring blast holes for total depth and water depth
    • Transporting and handling of explosives at the blast site and ensuring proper disposal of blasting refuse
    • Ensuring that blasts are primed and loaded following the appropriate plan and procedures
    • Performing post-blast inspections and managing misfires
    • Managing the safe operation and functioning of the explosives magazines which includes rotating stock, monitoring supply levels, maintaining accurate inventory logs, and performing magazine inspections
    • Designing blasts using computer software and data collection tools and manually in the case of in-field adjustments
    • Storing, uploading and downloading electronic data generated from the blasting software and hardware
    • Facilitating MSHA or ATF inspections
  • Assembles primer and places primer with main charge in blast hole
  • Communicates and interacts with various departments and employees within various levels of organization
  • Directs proper hook-up and delay techniques of non-electric, electric, and/or electronic initiation systems in accordance with blast design and engineering criteria
  • May train and mentor other employees
  • Performs pre-shift and work area inspections
  • Performs other duties as required


Minimum Qualifications


  • Two (2) years of mine operations experience
  • Experience operating stemming equipment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must obtain permission to legally handle explosives per ATF standards once in position
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with all blast patterns, including securing blast areas from public access and equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures for clearing and securing a blast area in the event of an electrical storm
  • Knowledge and understanding of all MSHA and ATF regulation that pertain to site blasting operations
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety.




  • High School diploma or GED


  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • This is a safety sensitive role
  • Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and, as needed: respirator, rubber steel-toed boots, gloves, fall protection, protective clothing, goggles, face shield and other protective equipment as required
  • Employee may be required to work in environments that may include exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, noise, fumes, and gasses
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on uneven work surfaces and work on elevated platforms
  • Frequently may be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds during the course of the work day
  • May be required to work a non-standard schedule which may include shift work (other than day shift) in a 24/7/365 operation

Pay Range:

$30.50 - $35.90/Hour

Rate of pay dependent on competency, experience, qualifications and skills
