The Technical Expert, Environmental is a technical role responsible for advancing and improving PTFI’s environmental programs, particularly those related to hydrology, geochemistry, environmental monitoring, and adaptive management. This position provides expert guidance across environmental operations, facilitates program improvements, supports cross-functional problem solving, and strengthens environmental management systems. The role requires a field-oriented, hands-on professional who can translate technical frameworks into operational execution without direct supervisory authority.
Additional Responsibilities:
Program Improvement & Technical Support
- Facilitate, enhance, and continuously improve performance of integrated environmental monitoring and management programs, with emphasis on hydrology, geochemistry, water quality, tailings behavior, sediment chemistry, and related environmental processes.
- Provide expert input to support effectiveness of program elements such as:
- Long Term Environmental Monitoring Programs (hydrology, geochemistry, water & sediment quality, aquatic system responses).
- Environmental laboratory systems, QA/QC procedures, and analytical workflows.
- Environmental monitoring databases and digital reporting systems.
- Lowland and coastal restoration and monitoring programs as needed.
- Demonstrate the technical competency needed to recognize when systems are functioning properly and when they are not. Guide staff in making corrections
- Spend substantial time in the field, validating that monitoring programs, sampling protocols, operational controls, and environmental safeguards are being executed correctly.
- Review technical documents including monitoring reports, SOPs, work instructions, environmental management plans, database outputs, and regulatory submissions to ensure accuracy, clarity, and scientific rigor.
Operational support
- Help teams interpret environmental monitoring data, identify trends, and communicate recommendations for operational activities to address and anticipate risks, refine environmental controls, and adjust designated programs to address evolving site conditions and regulatory expectations.
- Support the application of technical requirements from regulators and corporate advisors into practical operations, ensuring scientific and regulatory expectations are integrated into day-to-day work.
- Provide expert support in reviewing and updating Tailings Management and Estuary technical approvals to ensure alignment with Indonesian regulations, PTFI commitments, and stakeholder input.
- Contribute to modernization of Environmental Management Systems (Enablon, EQuIS and LIMS systems) by helping improve SOPs, work instructions, workflows, and integration of digital tools used in monitoring, analysis, and reporting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence (No Direct Reports)
- Influence and support teams to ensure environmental commitments are met, compliance issues are resolved, and audit findings are closed.
- Act as a communication liaison between the Environmental Department, operation senior management, and FCX Environmental Management to ensure strong coordination and to help implement programs in accordance with best practices and help guide teams on appropriate prioritization of tasks.
- Serve as a facilitator and technical resource who supports the PTFI Environmental Division and collaborates with operations, mine divisions, external consultants, technical services, and environmental teams.
Mentorship, Training, and Staff Development
- Provide ongoing mentorship and coaching to environmental staff by reviewing work products, sharing best practices, and promoting technical skill development.
- Deliver and support environmental skills training, participate in workshops with area representatives, and contribute to building a strong internal talent pipeline.
- Support audit readiness by strengthening staff competencies and reinforcing quality practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrology, geochemistry, marine/coastal science, or related physical sciences.
- Ten (10) years of professional environmental experience, preferably in mining, large industrial settings, or environmental consulting.
- Strong background in hydrology, geochemistry, and environmental monitoring; coastal experience beneficial but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to work in the field under challenging conditions.
- Proven ability to translate technical programs into operational practice.
- Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with experience working cross functionally. Strong focus on meeting internal customer requirements.
- Prior involvement in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) or digital environmental systems preferred.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and safety.
- Excellent report writing, analytical, and conceptual problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse workforce.
- Fluent in English (oral and written) and willing to learn Bahasa.
