The Technical Expert, Remote Technology Specialist is responsible for advancing the capability of the national workforce in remote and automated mining technologies across PTFI underground operations. Reporting through Operations Maintenance, this role ensures alignment with operational priorities, equipment reliability, and safe execution.

This is a hands-on role focused on building frontline capability, improving system reliability, and supporting the deployment and optimization of remote-control and automation systems. The position works closely with Operations, Underground Technology, and OEM partners to ensure effective integration and performance of digitally enabled equipment.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Ensure safe, reliable, and productive operation of remote and tele-remote mining systems across underground operations.
  2. Diagnose and resolve complex automation, control, and communication system issues to minimize downtime.
  3. Provide hands-on coaching and technical mentoring to develop national workforce capability in remote and automated systems.
  4. Support commissioning, deployment, and optimization of remote and autonomous technologies, including testing and operational handover.
  5. Ensure effective integration between mobile equipment, control systems, and underground communication networks.
  6. Drive continuous improvement in maintenance practices, system performance, and reliability of remote-enabled equipment.
  7. Collaborate with OEMs and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and improve system performance.
  8. Lead or support RCFA investigations related to automation and remote-system failures.
  9. Ensure compliance with safety standards, procedures, and critical controls related to remote operations.
  10. Develop and maintain technical documentation and training materials to support sustainable capability development.

Qualifications

  • Trade Certificate / Diploma in Automation, Auto-Electrical, Control Systems, or related discipline.
  • Eight (8) years of experience with remote or autonomous mining systems (preferred underground).
  • Fluent in English (oral and written) and willing to learn Bahasa.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong experience with CAT Command (mandatory); exposure to Sandvik AutoMine / UFR – Universal Field Robots and RCT highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of CAN bus systems, PLCs, I/O architectures, communication protocols, wireless networks, and auto-electrical machine control systems (including sensors and camera systems).
  • Proven troubleshooting capability to diagnose and resolve complex onboard / offboard issues, including signal latency, communication loss, sensor calibration, camera systems, and control system failures.
  • Experience across FAT/SAT, commissioning, tuning, optimization, and deployment of remote and tele-remote technologies.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and control logic documentation.
  • Experience conducting RCFA (Root Cause Failure Analysis) with a focus on defect elimination and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated capability in training and developing technicians and operators.
  • Strong collaborator to work across multiple divisions - Operations, Technology, and OEM stakeholders.
