Where You Will Work    

Our global headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona. Several hundred employees support our operations in finance, human resources, health and safety, information technology, planning, and more. Our flexible work program allows employees to work virtually as well as come together in person when needed at our Collaboration Hub in Phoenix and/or one of our site locations. Employees can work remotely from most states in the U.S., with the exception of California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Additional states may be excluded from remote work based on business factors. Should the position shift to in-person (office/site) work in the future, the company will offer relocation benefits at that time, so long as the position meets the established eligibility for these benefits. 

Description

The Manager of Geoscience supports FCX Exploration and Business Development programs and helps deliver results by applying best-informed geologic and technical practices, particularly in early-stage greenfield target generation, evaluation, and exploration program design. The position has visibility and expectation to contribute at the strategic level, down to mentoring and practical implementation at the detailed field- or lab-team level. The role also supports other FCX leaders in innovation and research in operations and early-stage exploration techniques as well as orebody knowledge acquisition, value-identification, and use across both Exploration and other FCX user groups.

As an internal expert the Manager has leadership roles across various exploration, mine site geology, mineral processing and related groups.

  • Strategic Planning and Target Generation: Development of exploration strategies to safely and effectively deliver high-quality copper district discoveries to FCX at low cost. Identification of high potential targets meeting Freeport criteria. Project generation.
  • Technical Leadership: Lead and advise exploration project managers. Apply technical expertise - guidance and mentoring – on exploration program toolkit selection. Quality assurance and control, including peer review of internally generated projects/opportunities. Support and guidance on global ATS targeting system. 
  • Business: Assistance on commercial transactions. Advise on budgets, resources and timelines for exploration activities.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication and ability to ensure targeting team remains focused. Stakeholder engagement as necessary – building and maintaining strong relationships. Ability to communicate to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior management. Ability to work and lead collaboratively across FCX groups, without direct formal authority. 
  • Safety Leadership: A strong commitment to Freeport’s safety culture and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as requested

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Geology, Geological Engineering, or related field
  • At least 15+ years of copper and related mineral exploration and practical-research experience
  • Proven experience and capability to work across multiple diverse cultures 
  • Superb written and oral communications
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing teams, projects, or initiatives within mineral exploration or related fields

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD
  • A record of publication on technical and practical exploration topics via peer-reviewed journals or other venue

Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional incentive compensation considerations based on company and individual performance.  Additionally, this position is currently eligible for annual long-term incentive consideration.  Long-term incentives are contingent upon authorized approval under the terms and conditions of the Company's plan and award agreements.
