Where You Will Work    

Our global headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona. Several hundred employees support global operations in finance, human resources, information technology, planning and more from the main office, satellite offices or online. As a Hybrid employee, you’ll engage in virtual collaboration as well as attend in-person meetings at our Collaboration Hub in Phoenix or at one of our site locations. The Collaboration Hub provides an open, flexible workspace for individuals and teams to come together for various business needs. Amenities at the Hub include a working café, phone booths and meeting rooms with technology tools for virtual and in-person collaboration. In-person attendance may vary based on the position and department requirements.

What You Will Do

We are seeking a Health & Safety Design Review Specialist to support engineering design reviews with a strong focus on health and safety throughout both design and construction phases of corporate projects. This role involves approximately 40% travel to domestic and international sites to participate in safety-focused evaluations such as HAZOPs, HAZIDs, PHAs, and other technical review processes, ensuring risk mitigation and regulatory compliance are embedded in every stage of project development.

  • Develop and apply standardized processes to evaluate engineering designs, drawings, and process modifications for potential health and safety risks.
  • Analyze technical documentation to identify hazards and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Drive timely completion of safety-related action items from design reviews, process changes, and equipment commissioning.
  • Ensure accountability and resolution of identified safety issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess the necessity, feasibility, and impact of proposed safety solutions, including automation and engineering controls.
  • Conduct and support hazard identification activities such as HAZOPs, HAZIDs, and PHAs.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to reduce risk and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of project safety programs aligned with corporate policies and industry best practices.
  • Lead or participate in on-site teams to ensure safe project execution.
  • Provide technical guidance, conduct root cause analyses, and support field-level safety initiatives related to design and construction.
  • Establish and manage processes for effective handover of design intent, including documentation for baseline testing, preventive maintenance, and inspection planning.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for project teams across sites, sharing safety insights, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Oversee and coordinate external consultants and contractors to ensure alignment with corporate safety and design expectations.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support corporate engineering and safety initiatives.

What You Bring To Freeport

  • High School Diploma AND twelve (12) years of Project, process, and/or design engineering experience; OR
  • Associate degree in Engineering related discipline, Health & Safety or related degree; AND nine (9) years of Project, process, and/or design engineering experience ;OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Health & Safety or related degree; AND seven (7) years of Project, process, and/or design engineering experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Health & Safety, or a related degree; AND five (5) years of Project, process, and/or design engineering experience. 
  • Strong understanding of engineering design principles and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with hazard analysis methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, HAZID, PHA).
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry best practices in health and safety.
  • Awareness of lifecycle planning, preventive maintenance, and inspection protocols.
  • Proficient in evaluating technical drawings and processing documentation for safety risks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk mitigation and solution feasibility.
  • Effective project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and reporting.
  • Lead and facilitate safety reviews and technical discussions with cross-functional teams.
  • Travel domestically and internationally (~40%) to support project-related safety evaluations.
  • Work independently while managing multiple priorities under general supervision.
  • Influence and coordinate effectively with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and drive implementation of corrective actions.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety programs aligned with corporate objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field.

  • Professional certifications such as:

      • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

      • Professional Engineer (PE)

      • Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • Experience with automation and engineering controls in safety design.

  • Experience in mining, manufacturing, or industrial plant environments.

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in safety-critical projects.

  • Multilingual communication skills for international collaboration.

What We Offer You 

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently $95,500-$134,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
